How to buy wine stocks

The 22 companies in the VINCAP Wine Stock Index trade on 16 exchanges in 13 countries. Buying one is an ordinary share purchase through a broker that reaches that exchange. This is not investment advice.

Reading the ticker

A symbol is a base code plus a suffix naming the exchange — .AX for ASX, .SN for Santiago and .SZ for Shenzhen. A broker may spell it differently; the instrument is the same.

Symbols with no suffix are US quotations: CWGL on OTCQB and WVVI on Nasdaq.

Buying from another country

Every company is priced from its primary listing; the question is whether your broker reaches that exchange.

An OTC quotation is a dealer market, not an exchange listing; a thin line can go sessions without a trade.

Retired depositary lines stay on record: Viña Concha y Toro's NYSE line, VCO, was delisted on 2018-07-02.

The currency you hold

The 22 companies are priced in 10 currencies: EUR (8), AUD (2), CLP (2), GBP (2), NZD (2), USD (2), CNY (1), INR (1), PLN (1) and RON (1). In your own currency, the share's move and the currency's move combine.

London prices are quoted in pence; 100 pence make one pound.
